I finished three of the 7 books In used for a 7th grade project. The project was for 7th graders to place a book on hold in the OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog). We are also using these books for our next project, plus other books. I decided to read them because I wanted to imagine what a writer would need to research to create a book that is historical fiction and specifically set in the Middle Ages.
These seven titles are as follows,
Adam of the road by Vining
Child of May by Tomlinson
The Book of the Lion by Cadnum
Fire, Bed, and Bone by Branford
At the Crossing by Crossley-Holland
The Executioner's Daughter by Williams
The three books I read were Child of May, The book of the Lion, and Fire, Bed, and Bone.
Child of May is set in the Sherwood Forest and is a variation on the Robin Hood story. The main character is 15-year-old Magda. She lives in the forest with Marion. She knows Robert (Robin), he visits the clearing in the forest and recruits her to help rescue prisoned nobles. This is definitely not the Disney Robin Hood, but I found it entertaining and a quick read.
The book of the lion follows 17-year-old Edmund into to Holy Land on crusade. He is part of the crusade with King Richard. If you are not too squeamish, you might like this book. If you are familiar with the events of the crusade, it covers the brutality of the Christians upon capturing Jerusalem. This would not be my first pick of the three, but for those interested in the crusades, it gives a glimpse into the life style and trevails of getting to the Holy Land from Medieval England.
Fire, bed, and bone is told by the old dog in the home. I love the voice of the dog as she tries to make sense of losing her master. This story is set after one of the great plagues and the landowners attempts to quell serfs from leaving lands and to keep them subservient and quiet. While reading this book, I was reminded of Crispin by Avi. I think Crispin is a better book for me, but I loved seeing similar events through the eyes of a dog.
In any case, remember the library has some great reads about historical periods in history. Try doing a power search using historical fiction, then a couple of other keywords to bring up books in your favorite historical period or you can use a power search to pinpoint the exact books you are looking for.
Have fun reading!!
